چکیده

T HE OPPORTUNITY presented itself recently for the study of a case of chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura characterized by the presence of unusually large agranular platelets. Several features indicated that the platelets were physiologically defective and led to the diagnosis of a thrombopathic or thrombasthenic type of thrombocytopenic purpura. When a blood transfusion from a polycythemic donor with an excessive number of normal blood platelets was administered by means of silicone coated syringes, it was possible to make certain studies of platelet physiology and platelet survival time. The resulting observations and the deductions drawn from them form the basis of this r. port.

Defective platelet-fibrinogen interaction in hereditary canine thrombopathia.

A unique, intrinsic, hereditary canine platelet disorder attributable to abnormal fibrinogen receptor availability is described. Thrombopathic platelets from 13 severely affected basset hounds failed to aggregate in response to all agonists tested except thrombin. Normal platelet interaction with the various stimuli was inferred on the basis of their ability to elicit unimpaired shape change in...

Neonatal thrombocytopenia and platelet transfusion - a UK perspective.

Five percent of newborn infants admitted to UK neonatal units during a recent study developed a platelet count <60 × 10(9)/l, and 60% of these were transfused platelets. This review summarises the common causes and mechanisms of thrombocytopenia in the newborn. Relevant evidence relating the platelet count to the risk of haemorrhage is reviewed, and current UK guidance on transfusion thresholds...

Can Macrothrombocytopenia Mislead the Treatment of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura?

Idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by isolated thrombocytopenia and mucocutaneous bleeding. The former has a primary role in the diagnosis and treatment of ITP. One of the leading causes of miscounted platelets in patients who suffer from ITP is giant platelets which may indicate factitiously a severe false thrombocytopenia. Here, a case of macroth...
